What is metadata?

When a doctor hands you a written prescription, he is not handing you a bottle of pills, he is handing you a description of the pills. Likewise, when we design metadata, we are creating a "prescription" for data, not the data itself. A data model contains the metadata (the prescriptions) for all the data needs for an organization for a particular computer system. Hence, a data model is an extremely valuable IT resource. It represents countless hours of thought about an organization's requirements. This data model can be handed to a systems analyst or programmer (i.e. the pharmacy) as a blue print for implementation. The development of accurate data models ensure that the knowledge base in your employees heads persists through personnel turnovers. Data models can also be used to translate your requirements into other formats needed by IT staff or external partners.
